Hybrid
variant of the tank T-55-64
(Modernization
of the tank T-55)
The tank T-55 of Soviet production is the most known and most spread
tank in the world.
Beginning from years 50s were produced about 70 000 of T-55 tanks
without taking in consideration production of this tank in
Recently there are about 30 countries have about 40 000 tanks and
20 000 from them are in working condition.
This tank is known for its reliability, battle effectiveness, simplicity
of use, and the main think chip cost of service in comparison with other tanks.
That is why most part of the countries do not in a hurry to take this
tank out from the army service and in the contrary, they want modernize this
machine and increase its battle potential till the level of modern tanks,
prolong its life.
Beside economic and technical reasons existing also psychological aspect
of the T-55 story.
These are – traditions, experience of preparation of not one generation
of tank specialists, habit and very big quantity (in some countries some
millions) of
Existing some variants of T-55
modernization. Some of them can change completely tactic –technical characteristics
of the tank and its look.
These variants have rather big cost, if we take in consideration the
parameter “effectiveness/cost” and first of all demonstrate high technology
capacities of the designer, but not cost effective variant of modernization.

Nowadays there is
an interest to the simplified variant of T-55 modernization:
-
refreshment of the turret,
-
chassis modernized with an aim of increase protection,
increase speed ( by installation of more powerful engine)
-
modernization of transmission
and suspension.
Existing some variants of
modernization in accordance with this scheme in which are used different types
of engines and transmissions, with different cost and characteristics.
So we are
presenting new variant of modernization of T-55 which consist of exchange of
old chassis of T-55 with the new chassis of the tank T-64 and installation of
additional protection of the turret.
The new – hybrid vehicle – hybrid of the tank T-55 and T-64, was
designed and sample produced under the name T-55-64.
This tank has chassis from T-64 and the modernized turret from T-55.

In comparison with chassis of
T-55 – chassis of T-64 is more reliable, proven during many years of use, with
more than 2 times increased armor protection, with better hydraulic control
system, better suspension, better caterpillar, with
higher speed and with more cruising range.
The weight of hybrid is 33,8 ton.
The engine – multi fuel opposite, flat diesel of the type 5-TDF with the
power – 700 h/p.(Photo 3).
Because the fact that the weight of the tank T-64 on 7 ton more than
T-55-64, the chassis of
T-64 with light T-55 turret, has bigger life of all details and
units. Also decrease the load on the engine and increase the max temperature of
its work.
The new chassis gives also possibility to increase the number of rounds
from 45 till 55 pieces.

The turret of T-55-64 – is the same turret of T-55 with 100 mm/ gun, but
has additionally installed last generation, Ukrainian made ERA (Explosive Reactive
Armor) protection set with significantly increase protection level (Photo 2).

Service and repair of T64
chassis is more simple in comparison n with T-55 because of design of motor
compartment of T-64 (Photo 3)
This T-55-64 hybrid is not a
sample of high technology, this is attempt to cut the
gap between the tanks of firs generation and modern technique.
It is interesting variant
also from the business point of view, because of reasonably low cost of the
chassis of T-64 and refreshment of the turret.
Technical characteristics
This tank has chassis from
T-64 tank with more than 2 times increased armor protection, with better
hydraulic control system, better suspension, better caterpillar, with higher speed and with more cruising range.
Because the fact, that the weight of the
tank T-64 on 7 ton more than T-55-64, the chassis of T-64 with light T-55
